    In the lead up to National AccessAbility Week (May 28-June 3, 2023), the Okanagan Regional Library (ORL) is excited to announce the formation of an Accessibility Committee to improve accessibility and comply with the Accessible BC Act, which the BC provincial government passed in June 2021. The Act establishes a legal framework to identify, remove, and prevent barriers to the full and equal participation of people with disabilities in BC. Over 926,000 people live with some sort of disability in BC who face various barriers.

  • Danielle Hubbard appointed new ORL CEO

    Okanagan Regional Library has announced the appointment of Danielle Hubbard as their new CEO. After Don Nettleton retired from his position as CEO, Jeremy Feddersen, CFO, was selected by the Board of Directors to become an Interim CEO. At the same time, ORL looked for a new leader. Hubbard became the successful applicant for the CEO position and will officially assume responsibilities on Tuesday, November 1st, 2022.

  • Announcement of District of Lake Country Library Service Changes

    The Okanagan Regional Library provides Library services to the citizens of Lake Country. For over 30 years, the Okanagan Regional Library Board has had established policies to guide communities and staff expectations for branch placement, sizes and open hours. The District of Lake Country has historically been serviced from 2 locations – the main library, which is currently situated in the Lake Country Municipal Hall and from a tiny location in Oyama. This Oyama library existed for historical reasons and has not met Board standards or policies for branch size or location (due to the small population being served and the proximity of other nearby libraries).

  • May 19 2021 ORL Board Meeting

    At the May 19th, 2021 Meeting of the Okanagan Regional Library Board of Trustees, the Board was presented with a financial "clean bill of health" from auditors BDO Canada for the 2020 fiscal year. The Library system strengthened its balance sheet in 2020 with an increase in financial assets and decreased the overall net debt. It also posted a surplus for the year, most of which will be transferred to the building reserve to help to finance new branches such as West Kelowna.

  • ORL eBooks - Auto-checkout for held digital books is getting replaced by new options on March 2

    Do you use the ORL eBooks|OverDrive collection to enjoy digital books? OverDrive is changing how you check out requested books that become available to borrow so that you can better manage your holds! Currently, when requested digital books become available, they are automatically checked out to your account. On March 2, this will change for all new and existing holds. When your hold becomes available, you will be notified, and you will have a 3-day window when you can either borrow your book, redeliver it at a later date if you don't have time to read it, or cancel the hold if you no longer want the book.

  • Your access to eBooks is at risk

    Public Libraries are facing a battle with Macmillan Publishing to ensure access for all communities to eBook materials. Macmillan Publishing, one of the big five publishers, is significantly limiting the availability and quantity of eBooks to all libraries. Because of this change, implemented November 1st, ORL will be allowed only one copy of an eBook to serve our population of 400,000 people for the first two months.

    Naxos Music Library added to the Okanagan Regional Library's digital offerings. Now available for streaming at the click of a mouse! Naxos Music Library – is the world's largest online classical music library. As of September 2013, it offers streaming access to over 87,000 CDs with over 1.275 million tracks. On average, over 800 new CDs are added to the library every month.

  • The Okanagan Regional Library’s CEO is sailing away

    Stephanie Hall has been the CEO since February of 2013, but come March, she will be resigning in order to sail around the world on the tallship Picton Castle. This is not the first time Hall has taken an offshore sailing voyage, having sailed from Seville, Spain to Victoria BC aboard the topsail schooner Pacific Swift at the age of 20. “It was a difficult decision”, said Hall, “as the team at the ORL has been stellar, and the work our staff do in communities is so important. But I’ve wanted to do a total circumnavigation for a long time, and the best time to pursue your dreams is never ‘in a few years’.”

  • Oliver branch is open with limited services, restoration continues

    Damage from a roof leak is impacting our service to you. The Oliver library branch is open during its regular hours, but with limited service because there is no access to the main part of the library. Public are invited to pick up holds, renew or return items, and borrow from a small selection of books and other items. We hope to have two 15 minute public internet stations (one with a printer) available on Tuesday, January 31. We expect access to our full library collection and services will return to normal on Tuesday, February 7.
