Public Services Librarian (Auxiliary On-Call - no guaranteed hours)

$41.03 - $44.56 per hour

Are you passionate about library services and community engagement? The Okanagan Regional Library (ORL) is expanding and looking for Auxiliary Public Services Librarians to join our team! This is an excellent opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the community while working in a dynamic and collaborative environment.

Serving 26 diverse communities across British Columbia, the ORL is a vibrant library system with 30 branches, 300+ employees, and a service population of over 400,000 people. Our libraries connect people with information, resources, and programming that enrich lives and build strong communities.

 

The Opportunity

As a Public Services Librarian, you will play a vital role in delivering outstanding library services, programs, and resources to the community. Under the direction of the Branch Head Librarian, you will:

  • Plan, organize, and evaluate in-branch services and programs, with a focus on adult users.
  • Engage with community members, schools, service agencies, and cultural organizations to promote library services and assess community needs.
  • Provide expert reference and research support to library users and internal teams.
  • Lead and support staff, offering training and guidance as needed.
  • Contribute to ORL committees, supporting system-wide library initiatives.

Curate and maintain an engaging and relevant adult collection.

 

What We’re Looking For

We seek professionals who are enthusiastic, adaptable, and committed to service excellence. The ideal candidate will have:

  • A Master’s degree in Library Science from an accredited institution.
  • Strong knowledge of library collections, programming, and resources.
  • Confidence in leading public programming and community outreach.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to new service directions.
  • Excellent teamwork and relationship-building abilities.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
  • A valid B.C. driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle (for travel between branches).

 

What to Expect as an Auxiliary On-Call Librarian

This flexible role provides coverage for vacations and sick leave for permanent employees. You must be available during peak times, including evenings, weekends, and around holidays.
