The Okanagan Regional Library (ORL), in partnership with the District of Summerland, is pleased to announce a new book recycling program available at the Summerland Library during open hours. This fully-funded initiative by the District of Summerland provides a convenient, accessible location for residents to responsibly recycle books that have reached the end of their usable life.
The program enables residents to recycle damaged books or those with low resale value, such as outdated textbooks and encyclopedias. This new service comes as the Summerland Landfill has discontinued its own book recycling program due to ongoing issues with theft and vandalism of recycling carts. By moving the service to the Summerland Library, the District of Summerland and ORL have ensured that this resource remains available to the community at no additional cost.
“We are thrilled to partner with the District of Summerland to bring this important service to the community,” said Danielle Hubbard, CEO of ORL. “With the Summerland Library as a central location, residents now have a convenient and secure place to recycle their books.”
In addition, residents are encouraged to sign up for an ORL library card while visiting the library to drop off their books for recycling. A library card opens up a world of resources, granting access to tens of thousands of books, magazines, and digital materials, including e-books, audiobooks, and movies. With an ORL library card, community members can enjoy a wealth of educational and entertainment resources, all free of charge.
Important Recycling Guidelines:
Please note that books, whether soft or hard cover, are not recyclable in standard home recycling programs or at the landfill recycling area.
