Helping Young Readers Build Confidence, One Page at a Time

Reading doesn’t look the same for everyone, and that’s okay. For some readers, building confidence takes time. Whether you’re supporting a child who finds reading challenging or simply looking for new ways to keep stories engaging, the ORL offers tools, collections, and ideas designed to meet young readers where they are.

One helpful place to start is our Junior Easy collection. These books act as a bridge between picture books and longer chapter books, offering engaging stories with manageable text. You’ll find well-loved series like Elephant and Piggie and Unicorn and Yeti, with a range of levels. Library staff are always happy to help locate these items at your local branch.

Keeping reading fun can make a big difference. Joke books, cookbooks, graphic novels, and choose-your-own-adventure stories all count as reading. For interactive fun, try reading different endings together or sharing character dialogue out loud, turning stories into playful performances.

Audiobooks are another powerful way to nurture a love of stories. Listening builds vocabulary, comprehension, and storytelling skills, and it’s a great option for car rides or quiet moments at home. The ORL offers audiobooks on CD as well as e-audiobooks through the Libby app, making it easy to find a format that works for your family.

For readers who thrive with a bit of extra motivation, reading challenges can be an encouraging boost. Beyond Summer Reading Club, the ORL offers reading challenges throughout the year for all ages. These often include creative or observational activities alongside reading.

Families can also explore literacy-based games that turn everyday moments into learning opportunities. Simple word games, rhyming challenges, or favourites like Boggle and Bananagrams help reinforce language skills while keeping things light and playful.

If you’d like personalized help, our What to Read Next form connects you with Youth Services staff who can recommend books based on your child’s interests and reading comfort. It’s a great way to discover new favourites!

Every reader’s journey is different. With the right mix of support, choice, and encouragement, confidence grows one page at a time. The ORL is here to support readers of all kinds, at every stage.
