SRC 2026: Meet JAWS, Superhero of the Reef

Three hundred teeth. No bones. Ready to come face-to-face with one of the ocean’s most misunderstood creatures?

This summer, the ORL’s Summer Reading Club invites families to dive beneath the waves for JAWS: Introducing the Superhero of the Reef, an exciting online presentation from the marine educators at Ocean Wise.

Sharks may have a fearsome reputation, but there’s much more to these incredible animals than sharp teeth. During this interactive virtual program, you’ll discover why sharks are among the ocean’s greatest success stories, how they’ve survived for hundreds of millions of years, and why healthy oceans depend on them.

Along the way, you’ll uncover some amazing shark facts:

  • Some sharks have around 3,000 teeth throughout their lifetime.
  • Many species can swim at speeds approaching 50 kilometres per hour.
  • Sharks don’t have bones. Their skeletons are made of flexible cartilage, helping them move efficiently through the water.

You’ll also learn about the important role sharks play in coral reef ecosystems, food webs, biodiversity, and marine conservation. The presentation explores topics including animal adaptations, ocean ecosystems, environmental stewardship, and how people can help protect marine life through everyday choices. Whether you already love sharks or you’re still deciding if they’re friend or foe, this program may just change the way you think about these remarkable animals.
