The Opportunity

As an Assistant Community Librarian, you’ll support community-focused library service by providing friendly, knowledgeable assistance to patrons and taking on a leadership role during supervisor absences. Under the direction of the Community Librarian, Branch Services Supervisor, or System Circulation Coordinator, you will help deliver programs, manage circulation services, and maintain library operations.

This is a permanent part-time position of 15 hours per week, ideal for those looking to contribute meaningfully to their community with a stable, ongoing role.

 

Responsibilities

Public Service Duties

  • Provide a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere for all customers.
  • Perform circulation duties including check-in/check-out, registering patrons, and handling customer accounts.
  • Offer readers’ advisory and basic reference service; assist with technology and access to digital resources.
  • Plan and deliver library programs for adults and children.
  • Handle patron inquiries and complaints with tact and professionalism.
  • Supervise branch services during short-term absences of the supervisor.

Operational Support

  • Prepare materials for shipment and manage deliveries and mail when necessary.
  • Maintain collection order and support shelving activities.
  • Run circulation reports, conduct shelf checks, and manage material requests.
  • Assist with cash reporting, displays, and facility cleanliness.
  • Provide input on branch procedures and participate in continuous service improvements.

Qualifications

Education

  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent.

Experience

  • Minimum of 1 year work or volunteer experience in a public-facing customer service or educational role (e.g., retail, hospitality, programming in recreation or cultural settings).

Skills and Abilities

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in mobile technology (Apple/Android), Internet use, and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Strong organizational and detail-oriented skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team setting.
  • Familiarity with basic cash handling procedures.
  • Physically capable of lifting bins and boxes of books and pushing book trucks.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and public service excellence.
