The Okanagan Regional Library (ORL) is seeking a meticulous and solutions-focused Library Technician to join our Technical Services team in Kelowna. In this vital role, you’ll apply your cataloguing expertise to ensure our library materials are accurately and efficiently organized for access across our 30-branch system. About the Okanagan Regional Library:
Located in beautiful British Columbia, ORL stretches from the Rocky Mountains through the wine and fruit-producing lands of the Okanagan Valley to the South Okanagan and west through the Similkameen. It is a vibrant library system with 30 branches serving 26 diverse communities, over 300 employees, and a service population of over 400,000 people.
The Opportunity:
Embark on a rewarding career with ORL as a Library Technician, where you will ensure the quality, accuracy, and consistency of our bibliographic records and support system-wide access to library materials.
Under the direction of the Head of Technical Services, the successful candidate will:
- Monitor and enhance the quality of bibliographic records for discoverability and accuracy.
- Maintain and update authority files and implement bulk updates to the Integrated Library System (ILS).
- Perform original and derived cataloguing, classification, and subject analysis for materials in all formats.
- Create and maintain procedural documentation and cataloguing training tools.
- Conduct quality audits and contribute to workflow improvements.
- Train and support cataloguing staff and respond to cataloguing queries across the system.
Qualifications:
Education
- Grade 12 completion.
- Library Technician Diploma (completed or upgraded within the past 10 years).
Experience
- Minimum of 2 years of current, relevant cataloguing experience, including original cataloguing.
- At least 1 additional year of experience in frontline library service.
Technical Skills and Competencies:
- Advanced knowledge of LCSH, Dewey, AACR2, RDA, MARC, and other emerging formats.
- Experience with cataloguing tools and protocols including Z39.50, MarcEdit, and bulk cataloguing utilities.
- High-level ILS proficiency and comfort performing batch updates and clean-up tasks.
- Excellent documentation and training skills.
- Strong organizational, communication, and analytical abilities.
- Physical ability to handle heavy boxes and book trucks.
Pay Rate:
Start Rate: $29.89 per hour / Job Rate: $31.42 per hour
