What is CELA?
The Okanagan Regional Library partners with the Centre for Equitable Library Access (CELA) to provide additional accessible collections to patrons with print disabilities.
CELA offers a large and growing collection of over 700,000 items for all ages, including books, newspapers, and magazines in a range of accessible formats.
These include audio, eAudio, eText, braille, printbraille, and eBraille. The collection includes English and French titles, with some materials available in other languages. Access to Bookshare, a U.S.-based accessible online library, is also included.
Who Can Sign Up
The CELA collection is available to library customers with a print disability, as defined by the Canadian Copyright Act:
- Learning disability: difficulty with comprehension
- Physical disability: inability to hold or handle a book
- Visual disability: severe or total vision impairment, or difficulty focusing or moving the eyes
CELA is also available to educators and professionals who support people with print disabilities.
How to Sign Up
To register for CELA, first contact your local library branch to confirm that your account is set up for Accessible Reading Services.
You can then:
Educators and professionals can register through the Educator Access Program or Client Access Support Program on the CELA website.
Find Books
Search or browse the CELA collection on the CELA website.
Delivery options include:
- Online access: read newspapers and download books or magazines
- Direct download: send materials to an internet-enabled DAISY player
- Mail delivery: receive DAISY audio CDs, embossed braille, or printbraille by mail
- Automatic selection: receive materials based on your interests
