Your ORL library card gives you access to thousands of free ebooks, e-audiobooks, e-magazines, and e-movies through the ORL’s Digital Collection. Whether you’re reading at the beach or listening on the go, having the right device makes all the difference.
Choosing the right device depends on how you want to read, watch, or listen. While library staff can’t recommend specific models, they can help you find reliable reviews and comparison guides.
E-Readers vs. Tablets: What’s the Difference?
E-Readers are designed specifically for reading. They’re lightweight, have long battery life, and perform well in bright sunlight. They’re ideal if:
- You want a dedicated device for ebooks
- You prefer less screen glare
- You value longer battery life (up to a month)
- You’re looking for a lower-cost option
Tablets offer more versatility. With a tablet, you can read, stream, browse, and use apps. Choose a tablet if:
- You want to read ebooks and enjoy e-audiobooks, e-magazines, and e-movies
- You want internet access, email, games, and video
- You prefer a larger screen and touchscreen options
Most tablets (iPads, Android, Amazon Fire) support the Libby app and work seamlessly with the ORL’s Digital Collection.
Device Compatibility with Library Ebooks in Canada
Not all devices work with borrowing ebooks from Canadian libraries. Here’s what you need to know before choosing your device.
Devices Not Compatible with Canadian Library Ebooks
Kindle E-Readers (All Models)
Kindle e-readers—including Paperwhite, Oasis, Scribe, and Basic models—are not compatible with Canadian library ebooks. Amazon has not enabled library borrowing features (like OverDrive or Libby) for Kindle devices outside the U.S.
Note: Kindle Fire tablets are compatible because you can install the Libby app or use a browser.
Older or Non-Wi-Fi E-Readers
Devices that don’t support Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) or don’t connect to Wi-Fi may not be able to transfer or display borrowed ebooks.
E-Ink Readers Without App or DRM Support
E-readers that lack built-in support for OverDrive, Adobe DRM, or web browsers likely won’t work for borrowing ebooks.

Try Before You Buy
Visit your local electronics store to test different devices. Ask yourself:
- Is the touchscreen responsive?
- Is the screen easy to read in bright light?
- Can I adjust font size and display settings?
- Is the device easy to hold?
What You’ll Need to Get Started
To access the ORL’s Digital Collection, make sure:
- Your library card is active – Renew it online or contact your local branch
- You know your PIN – Reset your PIN online if needed
- You have an email address – Required to create accounts for most digital services
If you’re using an older e-reader (like Kobo Glo, Aura, or Nook Simple Touch), you may also need a computer with internet access and Adobe Digital Editions to transfer files.
