Here are a few standout titles to add to your watchlist this month:

To Be Takei explores the life, career, and advocacy work of actor George Takei, best known for his role as Hikaru Sulu in Star Trek. Blending humour, personal history, and behind-the-scenes moments with his husband Brad, the documentary traces Takei’s journey from childhood incarceration in Japanese internment camps to becoming a prominent voice for equality and representation. Warm, thoughtful, and entertaining, the film offers an engaging portrait of a beloved cultural figure.

Set in 18th-century France, Portrait of a Lady on Fire follows Marianne, a painter commissioned to secretly create the wedding portrait of Héloïse, a reluctant bride-to-be. As the two women spend time together along the rugged Brittany coast, a powerful connection begins to grow during Héloïse’s final days of freedom. Beautifully filmed and emotionally layered, the movie explores art, memory, and forbidden love.

In I Saw the TV Glow, teenager Owen’s quiet suburban life begins to shift after discovering a mysterious late-night television show with a classmate. As the line between fiction and reality starts to blur, the film explores identity, isolation, and growing up through a surreal, atmospheric lens. Dreamlike and unsettling, it’s a striking modern psychological drama with strong emotional depth.

Queer Japan offers a vibrant and wide-ranging look at LGBTQ+ life in contemporary Japan through the voices of artists, activists, performers, and community members. Moving from major Pride celebrations to underground creative spaces, the documentary explores identity, self-expression, and the courage to live authentically. Colourful, energetic, and deeply personal, the film highlights the diversity of queer experiences across modern Japanese culture.

The Gospel According to André explores the remarkable life and career of fashion editor André Leon Talley, tracing his journey from the segregated American South to the centre of the international fashion world. Featuring interviews with influential designers, editors, and cultural figures, the documentary celebrates Talley’s creativity, influence, and larger-than-life personality. Stylish, insightful, and deeply personal, it offers a fascinating look at fashion, art, and cultural history.

Aimée & Jaguar is a powerful historical drama based on the true story of two women who fall in love in wartime Berlin during the Second World War. Set against the dangers and uncertainty of Nazi Germany, the film follows the relationship between Lilly Wust, a German mother, and Felice Schragenheim, a Jewish woman living in hiding. Emotional and deeply human, the movie explores love, risk, and resilience during one of history’s darkest periods.
