You’re Invited! The Librarians Film Screening and Panel Discussion

Freedom to Read Week is a time to celebrate the right of Canadians to read what they choose, and to recognize the vital role libraries play in protecting access to diverse ideas and perspectives.

To close out Freedom to Read Week 2026, the ORL is partnering with Okanagan College and UBC Okanagan to co-organize a special screening of the award-winning documentary The Librarians. The event takes place Saturday, February 28, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Okanagan College’s Kelowna Campus Theatre (S104).

The Librarians explores the evolving challenges facing libraries and the professionals who steward them. The film highlights the values at the heart of librarianship, including intellectual freedom, equitable access to information, and service to community.

Following the screening, guests are invited to stay for a panel discussion featuring:

  • Sarah Murdoch-Black, local teacher-librarian

  • Danielle Hubbard, CEO of the ORL

  • Dr. Astrida Neimanis, UBCO Associate Professor and Canada Research Chair in Feminist Environmental Humanities

Together, the panel will reflect on the themes raised in the film and discuss what they mean for schools, public libraries, post-secondary institutions, and communities across our region.

This event reflects the strength of partnership between the ORL, Okanagan College, and UBCO—bringing together educators, students, library staff, and community members for an evening of shared learning and dialogue. Popcorn and “banned book” cookies will be provided.

We hope you’ll join us for this meaningful community event. Please see the Okanagan College online event calendar for registration information.
