Family Literacy Day is the perfect chance to slow down, share a story, and try something new together. This year’s theme, Make Mealtime Family Learning Time, highlights how everyday moments, like planning meals, following recipes, or talking around the table, can spark a lifelong love of reading. From hands-on activities to digital tools, the ORL offers plenty of family-friendly ways to enjoy reading and learning on January 27, both at home and at your local branch.
Choose picture books, graphic novels, or a chapter book to enjoy as a group. Shared reading builds confidence and helps keep families connected. Browse your branch shelves or place a hold from home and settle in for a cozy reading session.
Join us for our popular Story Times, puzzles and games, crafts and activities, or STEAM programs designed for families. These activities build connections and create space for learning and creativity.
ORL librarians have designed three great Library of Things kits to help families experience the joy of reading and learning together.
Family Literacy Kit – Kindness
Family Literacy Kit – Families
Other Library of Things kits offer games, puzzles, robotics kits, and tech tools that support STEAM learning. Search our online catalogue or ask at your local branch for more information.
TumbleBook Library offers animated storybooks paired with simple learning activities. It’s a great way to introduce early reading skills in a playful format that kids love.
Libby makes it easy to download audiobooks for car rides and quiet afternoons. Pick something you can enjoy together and turn everyday moments into story time.
Tell us what your famioly enjoys reading, and the ORL will email you a curated list of five titles within five to seven days.
Select branches have Makerspaces filled with creative tools such as 3D printers, button makers, recording equipment, and craft supplies. Our Makerspaces are amazing places to explore hands-on literacy and STEAM learning.
