This winter, the ORL and the Vernon Public Art Gallery are working together to connect visual art with reading, learning, and cultural discovery. From 9 January to 11 March, the gallery is hosting exhibitions that consider how artists of all ages use materials, objects, and personal experience to make meaning.
After spending time with the exhibitions, you’re invited to continue that journey at the library. Gallery staff have curated the reading list below to help extend the ideas sparked by what you’ve seen. These titles look at art, creative process, material culture, and the many ways people use creativity to understand the world around them.
The exhibition Kitchen Corner by sculptor Samuel Roy-Bois runs from 8 January to 11 March. Inspired by everyday objects and architectural forms, Roy-Bois’s sculptural and mixed media works encourage viewers to slow down and reconsider what feels familiar. These sculptures occupy spaces of pause and transition, where objects shift from function to reflection and invite closer attention.
Alongside this exhibition, the gallery is also showcasing Art from the Heart, featuring artwork by SD22 elementary students. Running from 9 January to 7 February, this exhibition highlights expressive, thoughtful, and imaginative approaches to making art, offering a joyful look at creativity in its early stages.
Art often sparks questions. What inspired this piece? How do materials and space shape meaning? How do artists translate ideas into form? At the ORL, supporting that curiosity is at the heart of what we do. This collaboration offers a thoughtful way to move between visual art and the written word, while celebrating creativity at every stage.
