ORL Advocates for Libraries at Union of BC Municipalities

The Okanagan Regional Library recently joined mayors, councillors, and provincial leaders at the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) conference in Victoria to spotlight the vital role of libraries across the province.

During a panel session, ORL CEO Danielle Hubbard spoke about the changing face of frontline library work, including how public libraries are supporting communities through challenges like the opioid crisis. Attendees from across BC expressed deep passion for their local libraries and the important role they play in strengthening communities.

The ORL team also met with provincial staff, including the Assistant Deputy Minister of the Local Government Division and the Executive Director for Public Libraries, to share practical, solution-focused approaches for supporting libraries. These opportunities to connect help keep libraries visible as essential community infrastructure and ensure that decision-makers understand the positive impact libraries have on the people they serve.

The ORL remains committed to advocating for the library sector, building relationships that strengthen communities, and expanding services that help patrons access more of what they need—today and into the future.
