Are you organized and enjoy working with the public?

As a Library Page, you are working in a library environment and may have contact with the public. A Library Page handles various duties around the sorting and organizing of books and materials on the shelves.

Duties:

  • Sorts, organizes and prepares library materials for shelving
  • retrieves and shelves materials as required
  • assists with preparation of displays of library materials
  • may be asked to assist with seasonal/event/holiday displays
  • answers directional questions and refers to informational questions to appropriate staff
  • tidies public areas of library as required
  • other duties and projects as required

Requirements:

  • Must be a full time student
  • Must qualify for a Social Insurance Number
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instruction
  • Aptitude for detailed work
  • Ability to accurately file numerically and alphabetically
  • Punctual and reliable
  • Ability to communicate with courtesy, tact and interest with staff and all sectors of the public
  • Physically able to handle book bins, boxes of books and loaded book trucks

The Opportunity

Under the general supervision of the Administrative Services Manager, the incumbent acts as receptionist and purchasing clerk, and provides clerical support to staff.

Prepares and maintains files and records relating to the administration of the library system. 

Exercises some independent judgement and follows established Okanagan Regional Library policies, procedures, and practices.

As an Auxiliary On-Call employee, the expectation is to provide coverage for the vacation and sick time of Permanent Employees. 

Job Specification

Education

  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Plus, Certificate in Office Administration or equivalent.

Experience

Minimum two years full time (or equivalent) in an office environment, including purchasing/inventory experience, and recent office administration using Microsoft Office Suite.

Other Requirements

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Aptitude for detailed work.
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Demonstrated ability to accurately file numerically and alphabetically (paper and electronically).
  • Ability to communicate with courtesy, tact and interest with staff and all sectors of the public.
  • Considerable knowledge of computer software applications, including Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate business machines (copiers, scanners, mail machines, fax machines, telephone system, laminator).
  • Basic knowledge of transportation and warehousing function and ability to operate basic warehouse equipment (electric dock doors and dock plate, pallet jack, hand truck and platform truck)
  • Working knowledge of postal regulations and courier services.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of purchasing procedures and inventory control, including research skills.
  • Physical ability to handle heavy boxes.

The Opportunity

Under the direction of the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Library Facilities Lead is responsible for maintenance, repairs, and projects identified by the CFO for all Okanagan Regional Library (ORL) locations. As the Library Facilities Lead, you will be responsible for ensuring that our libraries are well-maintained, safe, and conducive to a positive user experience.

The incumbent requires a combination of project management, technical, and problem-solving skills and exercises independent judgment and develop and work within library policies, procedures, and practices

Working Conditions

  • Has contact with public and ORL employees.
  • Required to lift and push heavy objects.
  • Travel locally and regionally as required.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Building Operator Certificate or Foundations certificate in plumbing, electrical, carpentry or HVAC; or equivalent education and/or experience.

Related Experience

  • Three (3) years of experience as a Facilities Manager, Handyman, or in a similar role, preferably in a library or educational setting.
  • One (1) year of Project Management Experience, including directing sub-trades and tracking budget requirements for smaller projects.
  • Other Strong knowledge of building systems, including lighting, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and general carpentry.
  • Proficient in using tools and equipment common to maintenance and repair work.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Familiarity with safety regulations and best practices, particularly in a library environment.
  • Basic computer skills for record keeping and report generation.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (work and excel)
  • Valid BC driver’s license and proof of a clear driving record.
  • Bondable
  • Demonstrated knowledge of local, provincial, and federal traffic regulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to efficiently operate the assigned vehicle in safety and in conformity with legal requirements under all weather conditions.
  • Thorough knowledge of safe lifting techniques.

Under the direction of the Branch Head Librarian, the incumbent is responsible for the planning, organizing, delivery and evaluation of in branch services and programs. Public Services Librarians will be asked to participate on various committees to support system-wide library services, resources, and programs. This position may also be called on to support ORL with research required in support of strategic initiatives.

The Public Services Librarian liaises with community members, schools, service agencies and cultural organizations to determine community needs and promote library services and programs.

As an Auxiliary On-Call employee, the expectation is to provide coverage for the vacation and sick time of Permanent Employees. Auxiliary staff must be available for ‘Peak Times’ such as weekends, evenings, and days before and after holidays.

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Effective project and time management skills.
